When Community Health Centers do what they do best, not only are individual lives changed but communities are transformed. That’s what the team at Esperanza Health Center is working towards in Kensington, one of Pennsylvania’s communities most impacted by the opioid epidemic. The health center’s work began with transformation of a vacant former bank into a state-of-the-art health center, followed with construction of a parking garage, and most recently expanded with the Grand Opening of the health center’s CORE Wellness Center. The CORE—located in the heart of Kensington—offers a fully equipped gym to work out, beautiful space for community gatherings, and a gym to give kids safe space to play. Health center staff were joined last weekend by community members, local and state officials and many volunteers at the CORE Carnival to celebrate the CORE’s opening and continue the work to restore health to the community.
